Creativity and Sound,
By Peggy Black, Sacred Sound Salutarist

The voice is truly a healing instrument, especially when used with conscious intention. The idea is to allow self-expression of your emotions as they are present in your daily life. Sounds such as sighing, groaning, sobbing even screaming, are release sounds and cleanse the body. Humming, chanting and singing act to calm, soothe and promote health. Regenerative sounds that heal the body/mind are vowel sounds, overtones, toning and harmonics. The key is 'sound' awareness. These exercises can be done easily throughout the day, toning or singing while in the shower, screaming your frustrations while alone in the car. humming while you work. Bathe yourself in healing 'sound' vibrations. Sounds created with clear heartfelt intentions will heal and uplift you.

From Deepak Chopra's, "Possibilities for Body, Mind & Spirit". Sounds for balancing the whole body are the vowels, A E I O U. Take a deep breath and make the sound while exhaling, Each sound many be repeated several times. This should be done daily for optimum results. They can be said in different tones, fast or slow, or you can sing the vowels. Play with this. Let yourself experiment and experience how sounding the vowels feels in your body. Notice the subtle changes that begin to happen. Notice how you begin to feel.

More sound exercises from Deepak Chopra. We began by using the vowels each day for balance of the whole body. Then we added the use of HUM for the lungs, sinuses and skull as well as the sound MA repeated to the nasal passages and sinus headaches. This months exercise is for release of tension in the jaws (migraine & tension headaches). YA YOU YAI…repeat often to relax that area. The second exercise is for the ears, say the letter N N N. Hold the sound and you will sense the tones inside you ear canal. May you surround yourself with healing sounds.

Creative Book of the Month

Creating Your Indoor Fountain Garden: Expressions of the Self, by Paris Mannion, LCSW

So many of you have asked me about how to make an indoor fountain. Paris has written a great little book about the how-to's as well as including interesting topics like the fountain as an act and symbol of creation, your fountain as a healing tool, and fountains in history. You will even see photos of some of my fountains.

The Creative Process/ 9 Steps
(adapted from Robert Fritz's book, Creating)
.

No matter what you want to create, be it a new business, a relationship, more free time, a balanced life, abundance, fun, passion, your life purpose, you can use the creative process to manifest it. You are creating something now. Look at the list to see where you are in the process.

Here is a form (not a formula) you can use to create:

1. Conception-ask "what do I want to create and why?"
2. Vision-get clear, detailed, think unlimited possibilities!
3. Current Reality-be aware of where you are now in the present.
4. Take Action-don't wait! Plan, try new ways, just do it!
5. Adjust-learn-evaluate-adjust-What works and doesn't? Observe
6. Build momentum-add energy, use deadlines without pressure
7. Have a place to go next-focuses energy and direction to reach new heights.
8. Completion-You have arrived, acknowledge "it is done," celebrate!
9. Living with the creation-develop new relationship, become the audience

Step #1: Inspiration / Conception

The first step to creating anything we desire is to choose what we want to create. Then we can bring our talents, energy, action, intuition, logic and most importantly LOVE to it. First, we must remember, explore, discover and experiment with what we love, before our creation even exists. It is important to allow ourselves to play with ideas. Then when we act it is from the place of being the chooser, vs letting it happen to us passively, or as a response to another person, thing or experience. We create from making a choice and then bring our love to it. We keep our focus on the creation.

So to begin, ask yourself, "What do I want, where do I want to go and why? What do I love?" Make a list of 100 loves=things, concepts, to do's and ways of being. Look to see if you are trying to solve a problem, avoid or eliminate something. That is not creating. That is problem solving. It is important in this first step to play with ideas and concepts. The end result is not clear yet, nor is the how. You may try on many ideas or end results to see how they "fit." The end result or vision will then emerge clearly as you let inspiration and imagination guide you. Ask yourself "Where, when and with whom do I feel most inspired?" Enjoy calling forth the muses of inspiration to yourself!

Step #2: Vision

Dare to dream the impossible dream! That is what Don Quixote taught us. What are your dreams? If time and money were not an object, what would you really want for yourself? Look inside your heart now and ask, "What am I passionate about?" "What brings me true joy?" "What am I denying myself?" Be truthful with yourself! Our dreams and visions come from thoughts in our imagination, where the soul resides. Imagine your thoughts as seeds, that, when planted, become rooted, grow and blossom with commitment, nurturing and action. What seeds are you planting? Look at your life and you will see the flowers that you have grown. If you don't like what you see, re-vision and replant. Get specific with the details. Remember to write it down, then read it daily, image it, feel what it will be like when you have it, envision a symbol to represent it and let it go. Have fun and let me know what your latest vision is! Sharing it is powerful too! So tell others and enroll them in your vision. It will manifest even sooner with a team to support you.

Step #3: Current Reality

Once your vision is clear and you know where you want to go, it is important to know where you currently are in relationship to the result you want. This step is often left out because most people think the next thing to do is find out how to get to their vision.

At first you will discover there is a gap between where you are and where you are going. Some people use the metaphor of swinging from one trapeze to another. During that time, flying through the space of the unknown, before you have caught the next trapeze, can be tense and uncomfortable and scary. AND this energy of tension can be used to your advantage to propel you forward as you keep your eye on your vision, or the next trapeze. This tension can be your "call to action," which is step #4 in the creative process. Remember, YOU are the creator, the ultimate architect, of your vision and of your life. Hold that vision!

An example of checking the current reality: #1. I have an idea for an exciting new workshop that I know will meet the needs of all those people who want to live meaningful, joyful lives. #2 The workshop vision is to create a supportive community of co-facilitators and participants who are committed and ready to transform their lives into living works of art that they love. #3. The current reality is: I need to market the workshop, create the team, rent the site and enroll the participants. I have _# of prospects from my client base, a mailing list of _#, email list of _#, and ads in two magazines. I belong to two networking groups and a professional organization. The workshop materials are complete, no one is enrolled yet. I have 12 weeks until the workshop. I have a list of possible sites, nothing reserved. I am being alive! with vision myself and love the life I have created. I will attract the workshop community because I am modeling it. This is the current reality and the place from which I begin to take action steps toward the vision.

Step #4: Take Action

You may have lots of good ideas, and be able to see your vision clearly. You may continue to fantasize about it, planning and waiting until you are ready. Your good ideas will continue to be a dream unless you take action. Many people take workshops and seminars to make changes in their lives, yet nothing changes without getting into action. Sometimes the wanting, yearning and hoping continues and the vision doesn't become manifest. Fears and old beliefs can come up to block us and we feel stuck. Working with a professional at this stage may be helpful.

Step #5: Adjust / Learn / Evaluate / Fine Tune

After you have your initial concept, your vision is clear and specific, you have checked your current reality and begun to take action, it is time to notice what is working and what is not. As you observe the results of your actions and their effectiveness, you can make changes, observe, and adjust again if needed. Creating is an ongoing, organic, everchanging process. You learn as you go in the beginning. After a while you will develop the ability to produce effective actions more quickly. So the more you create, the more you are able to create effectively. And so you
keep evaluating, adjusting, learning and fine tuning until you create the results you want. In the next article you will read about how some of the best known creative genius's over 50 create.

Step #6: Building Momentum

Your creation exists now. You have been adjusting, evaluating, and learning what is working and isn’t. Now it is time to focus on building momentum as you add energy to what you want to create. Paying attention to your personal rhythms allows you to take advantage of when you have the energy to focus and accomplish your project. If you try and create when your energy is low, you may find yourself “spinning your wheels” feeling inefficient.

Determining action steps and dates by when you want to accomplish them helps to build momentum. With each step accomplished, the next one tends to be easier and helps to create focus. At first you are giving energy to the creation, but as you build momentum, the creation is giving you energy! By the end you should feel very
energized.

My coaching clients and I work on this together using “Intentions” sheets I have designed to record the action steps and by when dates. If you would like a copy, please email me your request and I will be happy to send you one.

So when people talk about being burned out, you know that they are doing something out of alignment with this process. The natural path of energy in the creative process is to build, not to decrease and be depleted.

Step #7: Always Have a Place to go

To be creative, you must practice creating! The more you create, the easier it will become and the more experience you will have. So start with a small project, like making a flower arrangement, cooking a new dish, adding color to your garden, accessorizing an outfit, cleaning out the garage, or building something simple, like shelves.

Let's use making a silk flower arrangement as an example.

As the creator, designer, architect, you start with an idea about something you want to create (step #1). You are redecorating your home and want a large, dramatic floral arrangement for your living room to bring all the different colors together. Your vision is clear and specific (step #2). You want it to sit on the floor and be 3' high. It will have flowers in shades of rose, cream, light yellows with two shades of green and some textured branches. You look to see what you have and what you need to make this arrangement (check your current reality step #3). You remember a large vase that you have in the garage that will be perfect, but you will need to purchase the silk flowers. You look at your schedule and decide when you will go and to which store and how much you want to spend. You gather your supplies and begin to put it together (take action, step #4). It is looking great, and so, excitedly you take it into the living room and put it on the floor. You step back to view it. Mmmm...you see that it needs to be a little higher, that you need more green and less rose. So you evaluate, learn and adjust (step #5). You adjust the colors and try putting it up on a small table. That works well. And now you have also learned that it would have been better to have created the arrangement in that room so you would have seen the needed height. You are building momentum (step #6), with your energy and continued focus, as your creation is coming into form. This is great! You have lost track of time, you are involved, you are feeling energized, you are having fun and feel a sense of freedom and self-expression. You just might want to do some arrangements for other rooms in the house. What rooms need some color, something alive and new? You begin to see where you could go next (step #7) to accessorize other rooms of your newly decorated home.

Step #8: Completion

All creative processes must come to an end. This can be a time of mixed emotions. There is often excitement with the completion and a feeling of accomplishment when the creation matches the vision, and also sadness or discomfort, knowing that things are just about over and done. One of the challenges of this stage is knowing that you are done and declaring it. This is a time of final decisions, polishing and final touches. Some people have difficulty with completing anything. You can always think of one more thing to add to make it perfect, and it never ends. If you have another creation in mind before you end the one you are involved with, you will be
able to use the momentum you have generated toward your next project. So, remember to measure your current reality with your vision, recognize when your vision is complete, declare it done, celebrate and acknowledge the completion and move on to your next creation.

Step #9: Living with your Creation (the last)

Your creation is now complete. There is nothing more to do. You are now the observer of your creation. How do you like it? What works and what doesn’t? There will be different degrees of satisfaction that range from disappointment to enthusiasm. Woody Allen has said that he has never really been satisfied with the films he has made, and yet he releases them anyway, much to the delight of his audiences. Whether you have created a work of art, a meal, a garden, home decor, a workbench, a book, a business project... only living with the creation over time will tell the story. Each time you create you learn, and over time your experience builds, and if you continue to develop and learn you will experience mastery. Remember there are no failures, no mistakes...only life lessons. So learn from your creations, celebrate them, acknowledge yourself, live with it and move on to your next one. What song in your heart wants to be be sung now?

Creating Aliveness / An example:

We all know about goal setting. I like to call them intentions now as they feel more heart-centered and unlimited. An intention is more general and an action step is more specific arid measurable. First we use our imagination, second we must get into action. The process of creating intentions and acting on them is very powerful. It is exciting to partner with my clients to be part of their "dream team"
An example:
The intention is to create more aliveness in your life. Let's use the formula.

1. The Idea is...You want to create some tie£ to rejuvenate. You love how you feel when you are relaxed. Your energy flows freely, you feel more productive, loving, joyful and at peace, with more energy for others in your life=alive!

2. The vision is to have an hour, at least three days a week, to be in nature. During that rejuvenation time alone you may walk, sit, listen, write, meditate, read, skip rocks, climb a tree, swing on swings, smell the flowers, do nothing, be...

3. The current reality is that you are scheduled so tightly that you don't have even 10 minutes to yourself most days. And you are committed to making this a priority for yourself.

4. The action steps: (written in the present tense) (and by when dates) you might choose are: ay 2/7/00
1. I go to bed and get up a half hour earlier Mon/Wed/Fri.
2. I look at the calendar and take off at least one scheduled item each day for the next 4 weeks.
3. I ask my spouse to support me in doing this.
4. I take time after each session in nature to notice how it affects me and keep a journal.
5. I decide on some of the places that I would like to spend time in nature.
6. I have alternate choices for differing kinds of weather.

This may sound structured, and yet with practice it will become second nature and you will find yourself manifesting your hearts' desires. It makes it more concrete to write out these steps. Be careful not to over plan or wait too long to get started.

Here are some powerful questions to ask yourself before you take action:
1. How will I stay focused, clear and in action?
2. What mi9ht distract me or get in my way of taking action?
3. What is my commitment level? Is this idea a "should?" (if so, take it off, as it most likely will not happen).
4. What will it feel like when I have "arrived?"
5. Who do I need to be to take this action and have the desired vision?
6. What beliefs do I have that could stop me?

Each of these questions could result in more action steps.

Having support to stay in action is always helpful. "No man is an island" is one of my favorite songs. Olympic athletes don't do it alone...nor do you need to. Look for support from mastermind groups, peers, a professional coach, support groups, classes...

And please write or call me if you have any questions or would like support through coaching.

A client recently email led me with this great testimonial on our coaching session!

"By the way, the coaching session you did with me last year regarding finding a renter roommate paid off in spades. The ideal \roommate dropped in my lap. effortlessly. I believe what helped was working with you to focus on what it was I truly wanted in a roommate and a roommate situation.

TO INSPIRE YOU...

RISKS:

"To laugh is to risk appearing the fool. To weep is to risk appearing sentimental. To reach out for another is to risk involvement. To expose feelings is to risk exposing your true self. To place your ideas, your dreams before a crowd is to risk their loss. To love is to risk not being loved in return. To live is to risk dying. To hope is to risk despair. To try is to risk failure. But risks must be taken, because the greatest hazard in life is to risk nothing. We may avoid suffering and sorrow, but we cannot learn, feel, change, grow, love, live. Chained by our certitudes we are slaves. We have forfeited our freedom. Only a person who risks is free." Anonymous

"And the day came when the risk to remain tight in the bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom." Anais Nin

VISION:

"Your vision will become clear only when you look into your heart. Who looks outside dreams. Who looks inside, awakens." Carl Jung

"The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams."
Eleanor Roosevelt

"Whatever you can do or dream you can, begin it. Boldness has genius, power and magic in it." Goethe

"Every master is a master of vision."
George Leonard, Aikido Master

ALIVENESS:

"Wholeness is the key to aliveness. Radiance comes from being at one with yourself and your experience. Life then flows through you and radiates from you."
Richard Moss

RENEWAL:

"Slow down and enjoy life. It's not only the scenery you miss by going too fast--you also miss the sense of where you are going and why." Eddie Cantor

"What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters, compared to what lies within us." Ralph Waldo Emerson

IS CREATIVITY ALIVE! AFTER 50?

The March-April issue of Modern Maturity Magazine (received when you join AARP) features two great articles on creativity. It was inspiring to read that creative people do not dry up at 50 years of age! I was so happy to read this as I am just now beginning to share my mandalas and silk painting with the world!

Poet, Maya Angelou is writing at the ripe age of 71. George Bernard Shaw won the Nobel Prize for literature in 1925 at the age of 69 and was working on a new play when he died at 94. Frank Lloyd Wright designed the Guggenheim Museum in New York City at 91. Mary Baker Eddy established The Christian Science Monitor at 87. Golda Meir served as prime minister of Israel from age 70-76. The article goes on to mention MANY more.

Creativity is an energy that moves through us at any age. It is the ability to think and express ourselves in a new way, When our life force is strong and we feel alive! our creativity flows. Gene Cohen says in his article, "Creativity can actually contribute to physical health as we age. Creative expression fosters positive feelings that prompt a positive outlook and a sense of
well-being. By promoting positive emotions, creativity promotes positive immune function."

When I used to visit Hawaii on vacation, I always dreamed about what it would be like to live here. The biggest question was how could I support myself? I had a vision of painting on pareos, or sarongs, with natural dyes. Working as a costume designer and then an image consultant, beauty, color, creativity, clothes and self-expression have always been my passion. I didn't
realize in those days, when I used to dream, that these images were my heart and soul calling. I didn't know how powerful my images, thoughts and feelings were and that I could really manifest my dream. I wasn't conscious of the creative process and how it works.

Now, as I am creating my life here in Hawaii as an artist, transformational retreat facilitator and coach, I see that I put this vision into motion about 15 years ago! I discovered that coaching (done mostly by phone) allows me the flexibility to live wherever I want. With this passion supporting me, I am free to pursue my other love--creating beauty through mandalas, masks and
fabric painting. The more I share my "Spirit Art" with others, the more I realize it's effect on others. Because now I am conscious of the creative process, all is becoming manifest much more quickly. Now I am very specific and detailed with my vision to travel the world leading creative spiritual journeys, to express myself as an artist, and to create a home/retreat center in Hawaii and in the mountains. You can live your vision too!

As our senses awaken from the long winter's rest, so can our passion, our energies, our knowingness, our joy, and our love. Enjoy the bright, vibrant colors of the new spring flowers, the lush greens after the rain, ripening fruits, and late spring snow (in Hawaii)? Wow! It's the coffee trees in abundant bloom with their tiny star-like white blossoms! Poems by Carol Lorraine

HAIKU is a Japanese form of poetry involving three lines with 5-7-5 syllables

Sacred knowledge lives
deep within the ancient stones
Listen with your heart

Stones speak ancient tongues
Layers deep they call to me
Let us help you grow

Radiant flowers
Sing softly in rainbow light
Calling the fairies to play

And other poems:

Little ego Big ego
Who am I to think I know?
Unless I surrender to the flow

Undulating waves gently cleanse my tired soul
Flowing gently ever freely
Bring me back to me

4. Sound Tip of the Month April 2001

These last few months we have been applying suggestions from The Humming Book by Elisa Lodge. You have used sound and movement to release anger and fear. Let’s do the same by humming out confusion or stuckness by making quick, sharp contractions. Push and pull the space around you, jab the air, punch and kick. The sound to make while you are jabbing punching and kicking is eah! eah! eah! eahh! EAHH! Next let’s release and hum out sadness and tears by melting, softening, sinking, making contracted gasping, moaning, groaning humming tones that dissolve all the dry hardened parts of you into heartfelt gratefulness. aaaahhh ahhh ahhh ahaa AAHHH AAHHH HHHHH!

Hum out joy by making quivering excited micro-movements, titillating, tickling, exploding all over your body with ecstatic joy. uhhh! uhhh! uuuuUHH! UHHHHHHH!
Elisa's, work is so powerful, we can reclaim our well-being through owning our suppressed emotions, giving them a voice and literally moving them out. Share with me any insights you experience.
